I have absolutely had enough of Facebook and Twitter for so many reasons I don't even know where to begin. Things have really been brought to head trying to use my Android tablet to access my social media accounts during adverse weather in Crete, when we have had insufficient electricity to use the desktops.

Both sites have ridiculous amounts of data to download before my start page even displays properly.

Whilst it is loading the page judders up and down so I have to sit patiently until it is fully loaded and the tablet battery is just about drained. As I scroll down my timeline further data has to be downloaded, the screen judders again and I am left waiting, helpless and fuming.

Then don't even get me started on the use of my personal data and the amount of tracking they both perform in an attempt to monitor my habits, even when off their site, in order to increase their profits.

I have previously baulked at quitting the sites because they do fulfil a function in my life, Facebook for gossip and photoswapping with friends and family around the world, Twitter for worldwide news from varied perspectives.

So after a fair amount of research I have decided invite some of my freinds to join me in trialling Elgg "a powerful open source social networking engine". From what I have seen this provides the functionality of Facebook, Twitter and a blog combined. It uses far less data to display a page and absolutely does NOT track you.
